Born on September 7, 1951, K. Clay Dawson is the son of World War II veteran Francis Carl Dawson and war bride Leslie Iris Collett Dawson from Auckland, New Zealand. Dawson graduated from Bluefield High School in 1969 and earned degrees from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale in 1972, where he studied commercial art.
Dawson pursued higher education at Bluefield State University from 1979 to 1982 as a Board of Regents Scholar, graduating summa cum laude as Class Valedictorian with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and a minor in English. He played on the college tennis team and represented the school on its academic college bowl team.
In 1982, he earned his Juris Doctor degree from Wake Forest University School of Law as an A.J. Fletcher Scholar. Over a long legal career, he practiced general law as a member of the North Carolina Bar, Forsyth County Bar, and Stokes County Bar, appearing before both federal and appellate courts. In 2012, he retired from law to devote himself fully to writing.
His work includes five sci-fi novels, among them the three-book Curse of Rogares series and the two-book Adventures of the Steel Riders series. He describes his style as “writing stories with stories.” Attack of the Phasmii is his first novel offered for publication. He is currently writing Jack Hammer, a story about a young attorney fighting powerful developers to protect Creole landowners under the guidance of the enigmatic Marie Leveau.
He married Patricia Ann Smith on June 7, 2008, in Mount Airy, North Carolina. Smith, a seasoned triage nurse, has supported his writing career while building her own nearly 40-year profession.
An enthusiastic ATV adventurer, Dawson has journeyed coast to coast from Half Hell Swamp, North Carolina, to Rubicon Springs, California. He founded the online discussion board ATV Time and the online magazine Steel Riders. He also manages Disability Granted, a website supporting blind and disabled individuals seeking social security assistance.
